SUMMARY:MAJOR! Documentary Screening
DESCRIPTION:Tree of Life Unitarian Universalist Congregation is honored to host a screening of MAJOR! which explores the life and campaigns of Miss Major Griffin-Gracy\, a formerly incarcerated Black transgender elder and activist who has been fighting for the rights of trans women of color for over 40 years. MAJOR! will be shown on Saturday\, March 29 at 7 pm at the church\, 5603 W. Bull Valley Road in McHenry. \nThe film is co-sponsored by Tree of Life\, McHenry County NOW\, and McHenry County Citizens for Choice. Admission is free and open to the public. Freewill donations will be held to support the work of the Transformative Justice Law Project which provides free legal services for trans and gender non-conforming people. \nMiss Major Griffin-Gracy is a veteran of the Stonewall Rebellion and a survivor of Attica State Prison\, a former sex worker\, an elder\, and a community leader and human rights activist. She is simply “Mama” to many in her community. Her personal story and activism for transgender civil rights intersects struggles for justice and equality of lesbian\, gay\, bisexual\, transgender\, and queer people (LGBTQ+) from the 1960s to today. At the center of her activism is her fierce advocacy for her girls\, trans women of color who have survived police brutality and incarceration in men’s jails and prisons. \nMAJOR! was an official selection at over 60 film festivals around the world and garnered 20 awards for best documentary. Miss Major’s story offers a roadmap for social justice movements lead by and for transgender women of color\, and a unique opportunity to learn from living elders.\nLight refreshments will be provided and an open discussion will follow the movie. \n“MAJOR! is both a challenging and inspirational film\, ” states Chaplain Dave Becker\, pastor at Tree of Life\, “and it is particularly relevant at this moment in time when so many of the rights that Miss Major fought so hard for are being rolled back. Hosting this film is part of our faith’s larger commitment to honoring the inherent worthiness and dignity of all people which includes our trans and gender non-conforming siblings.” \nThis program was organized by the Tree of Life’s Welcoming Congregation Team\, members of the congregation who help lead the church community’s commitment to welcome\, inclusion\, and belonging of the LGBTQ+ community with the congregation. Tree of Life has been engaged in the national Unitarian Universalist Association’s Welcoming Congregation Project since 2004.

SUMMARY:A backward slide of cultural acceptance of Violence Against Women
DESCRIPTION:Join us for an enlightening educational discussion as we delve into the cultural ramifications of acceptance of violence against women\, and the disconcerting trend of regression in support for women’s rights since 2016. In recent years\, despite significant strides towards gender equality\, we find ourselves confronted with a sobering reality – the persistence of violence against women and a concerning erosion of support for women’s rights. \nThis discussion aims to dissect the multifaceted layers of cultural acceptance surrounding violence against women\, shedding light on its deep-rooted implications. We will examine societal norms\, historical precedents\, media portrayals\, and institutional responses.\nJoin us as we confront uncomfortable truths and collectively strive towards a future where violence against women is unequivocally condemned\, and support for women’s rights is unwavering. \nTogether\, let us pave the path towards a more just and inclusive society for future generations.\n* REGISTRATION IS NECESSARY – LIMTED SEATING\nRSVP Here\n*DOORS OPEN AT 6:30PM

SUMMARY:Protest: The Supreme Court is Attacking Us – Again!
DESCRIPTION:Less than two years after overturning the constitutional right to abortion\, saying such decisions should be “left to the states\,” the Supreme Court is now considering a NATIONAL ban on one of two drugs used for 53% of abortions performed in the United States. \nAfter two decades of safe use in the United States and double that in much of Europe\, the drug mifepristone makes medical abortions less traumatic when used in combination with another drug\, misoprostol. Restricting or outright banning of mifepristone\, like every other politically-driven restriction on women and others to control our own bodies\, would just mean mountains more needless suffering for people like us. \nOn Tuesday\, March 26th\, the Supreme Court will be hearing oral arguments on a case brought by the anti-women\, anti-LGBTQ+ “Alliance Defending Freedom\,” the same far-right outfit* behind an avalanche of other bigoted legislation and court decisions.\nThe Court already is ethically challenged by de facto bribes from Federalist Society-aligned wealthy patrons. We must continue to expose the illegitimacy of a court packed with political hacks who twist the Constitution to meet their far-right agendas.\nTheir growing lack of legitimacy in the eyes of the public is what the court fears most! \nTherefore it’s up to us to broadcast far and wide WHY this court is illegitimate and that its politically-driven decisions MUST be challenged at every turn!\nPlease join us at 12 noon on March 26 in front of the U.S. Federal Courthouse\, 219 S. Dearborn\, Chicago. \nOnly WE must control our bodies – not bigoted judges and politicians!\n*ADF authored the model legislation behind the anti-abortion Dobbs decision and was the driving force behind last year’s anti-LGBTQ+ 303 Creative v. Elenis decision
